Synopsis for "A Costly Recapture"

J'onn J'onzz stares out at Thu'ulc'andra through a mind-linked telescope, his wide M'yri'ah calls him away and tells him to disregard his parents and brother's desires and to focus on his own family.

More recently, after crashing the car off the side of the road, J'onn risks burning to death in the wreckage of his police car, and Det. Diane Meade unsure of how to react as J'onn loses his form and appears to melt from the flames. Inside J'onn's head he sees the face of the girl they were tracking, Ashley Addams, and his daughter K'hym though both are a hallucination from thought residue, they act as a devil and angel on J'onn's shoulder - advising him to stay or run away. Before he can decide, Diane pulls his mangled body from the car and all the way to a nearby farm, safe from the fire, she demands to know exactly what had happened to her partner.

J'onn explains that back on Mars, he was also an officer. He recalls busting an illegal "seduction dome", he found the owner J'ekk S'ill but the Yellow Martian's body began to burn up, soon exploding into flame with a prophecy of Mars' downfall. J'onn calls in the death and returns to his daughter at her school, Institute. They decide to meet M'yri'ah at the museum which had a new exhibit on Thu'ulc'andrans (cavemen) and J'onn explains how their society reformed how Martian's composed themselves - to copy these cave people, Martians began to walk on two legs, wore external organs and such.

From the museum, the family travel to the Megacycle ceremony where Martians undergo a Chrysalis that forms their social shape out of their internal feelings, K'hym becomes excited for her own ceremony but the last words of J'ekk haunt J'onn's mind and he fears there may be no time for another ceremony.

Back in Colorado, J'onn tries to explain how fire caused this but he resolves to mind-wiping Diane to make her forget, but before he can, Diane shoots him and J'onn drops to the ground.
