Sister Mary was an agent of the Order of the Cross.
History
A former New York City police officer, Mary Pittarese became disillusioned with the corruption and ineffectiveness that permeated every level of the force. After one particularly disheartening case, she quit her job and joined the Order of the Cross, a secretive branch of the Roman Catholic Church whose mission is protecting humanity from the forces of evil.
As a soldier of the church, Sister Mary was charged with guarding the Miracle Child from the Black Angel. She and the Order allied with Deathblow and members of Team 7 to successfully defeat the Black Angel.
Following Armageddon, Sister Mary and the Order of the Cross allied with Wetworks in defending humanity from the Night Tribes and other deviants that took advantage of the cataclysm.
