Matches Malone was a hitman for the Waterfront Mob, as well as having connections with the Gotham Organized Crime.

Batman assumed Malone's identity when the real Malone was killed during a confrontation between the two; a bullet fired at Batman ricocheted and caught Malone in the heart.

In the following years, Batman would continue to use Malone's identity whenever he needed to go undercover as a known criminal.

  • This version of Matches Malone, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
  • Matches Malone's nickname derived from his habit of constantly striking matches.
  • Robin assumed Matches' identity — wearing an inflatable body stocking to make him appear the correct height and build — on one occasion, during the events of "The Lazarus Pit!", when it was important for the Waterfront hitman to be seen during Batman and Lo Ling's duel to the death. (Batman #243, August, 1972)
