History

Rise to Power

Major General Mateo Suárez was a native of Corto Maltese, and a good friend of Silvio Luna, both being intelligent and cunning military leaders sharing an aggressive anti-American outlook and hatred of the tyrannical Herrera regime of the Maltese government. Suárez was cruel and merciless, with an explosive temper and lust for power, although he had a soft spot for his best friend Luna, despite secretly looking down upon him for his romantic nature.

In 2021, he led Luna's army in a coup against the Herrera regime, and lived with him in the palace in the Maltese capitol of Valle Del Mar when he became "General Presidente" and Suárez became his right-hand. About a week later, the pair met the Thinker, a geneticist in charge of the military endeavor "Project Starfish" housed in the research facility Jotunheim. They investigated the project, and found its source a massive starfish-like alien nicknamed Starro by the Thinker, capable of producing mind-controlling spores that the Thinker had been trying to weaponize for thirty years. Luna and Suárez began making plans to use the beast to conquer the world, unaware that it was actually a weapon of the American government created by a deal with the Herreras.^[1]
