Mother Mercy is the creator of the Black Mercy plants used by Mongul, and the new Lantern for Sector 2261.
History
Mercy is actually one with the planet Ater Clementia. She has stated "I am this planet. This planet is me." For eons, she lived beneath the sea.[1]
One day she sensed a visitor to her planet in the form of an alien who crash landed on her planet. She learned that the alien was suffering and mortally wounded. She found that she was able to tap into this being's mind, sense its desires and joys, and cause the alien to be able to visualize them within his subconscious. This resulted in the alien's body releasing a constant stream of chemicals, neuro-dampeners, that influenced his perception of pain, easing it. Thus, she was able to generate a perpetual state of bliss in the alien. When the alien finally succumbed to its injuries and died, she found herself suddenly bombarded and overloaded with cries of pain from what seemed to be everywhere in the galaxy. She learned that she was, somehow, now a receptor of some kind, an empath, that could detect the physical and emotional pain of beings hundreds of thousands of miles away on other planets and travelling in space. She then realized her purpose, to ease suffering in the universe. She created the Black Mercy plants to be sent out into the universe and find those who were suffering and dying so that the plants could ease their pain. She also began to use her power to manipulate gravity on a massive scale, even on other planets and throughout space, to draw to the deceased bodies of those whose pain had been eased by the Black Mercy Plants. She used these bodies to feed her Black Mercy offspring before sending them into the universe.[1]
However, the first Mongul discovered the plants, and used them to spread his evil. Mother Mercy, however, kept her sentience hidden from Mongul.[1]
Eventually, Mongul II came to her planet and mutated some of the Black Mercy plants into giving their victims suffering. Later, this led to the Green Lantern Corps coming to her planet in search of Mongul II, who had acquired a Yellow Lantern Power Ring. The Lanterns fought and defeated Mongul II and Mother Mercy’s abilities to both ease and create fear, caused both a Green Lantern Power Ring and a Yellow Lantern Power Ring to chose her as a host. She ultimately chose the Green Lantern Power Ring, which, came from the recently deceased Bzzd, and became a member of the Green Lantern Corps.[2]
