Matthew Stockton was a private investigator that worked for Amanda McCoy.
History
He was hired by Amanda McCoy to spy on Daily Planet journalist Clark Kent.
Amanda previously discovered Clark Kent's secret identity on behalf of Lex Luthor, but she was fired for it because it appeared surreal to Lex Luthor.[1] She decided to hire Matthew to find definitive proof of it, but she always kept the reason a secret to him.
Matthew grew tired of her gatekeeping and decided to personally break in Clark's apartment at 344 Clinton Street. Unbeknownst to him, Clark Kent was the enemy of Intergang, a criminal organization that Kent previously exposed with several hit pieces that jeopardized their operations.
Intergang had sent several hitmen to Kent's apartment at the same time Matthew had broken into it. Due to Stockton's resemblance of Clark Kent and the hit taking place at night, the hitmen mistook Matt for Kent, killing him.[2]
