Matto Largo is a big tropical swamp, in South America, between Perotia and Brazos.

History

According to a Native Legend, Matto Largo is believed to be the land beneath which lies the Inferno of medieval legend. It lays between Brazos and Perotia, and is overrun with tropical-looking vegetation. In the early 1950s it was still mostly unexplored, and believed to be inhabited by reptilian-looking "Inferno Men." These turned out to be divers, wearing heavily-modified diving gear, for the purpose of sabotaging the Brazos/Perotia Tunnel project. They were defeated and arrested by the Blackhawks.

  • Matto Largo seems to be a Quality Universe version of a Real World state in Brazil called Matto Grosso, whose extent at the time encompassed the Pantanal ("big swamp"), the world's largest tropical wetland area, and the world's largest flooded grasslands.
