Max Kern was a professor and serial killer in New York City.

History

Dubbed Max the Knife, he killed several of his female students and cut pieces from their flesh to create flowers. He was shot and paralyzed by Leo McCloskey. Eight years later, a suspected copycat plagued the city. When Firebrand became involved with the case, his brother Javier Sanchez became convinced that Kern was actually behind the killings. Javier discovered that Kern had developed mental powers allowing him to control weak-minded individuals and used this to return to killing. With Firebrand overwhelmed by a mind-controlled mob, Javier resorted to pulling the plug on Max's life support, killing him.
