Michael Jon Carter is the time-travelling superhero-from-the-future Booster Gold.
History
After spending time in the 21st Century and getting to know his best friend Ted Kord, Booster went back into the future, disappearing for years and completely missing Superman's five year Regime.
When Booster discovered that Kord was to be assassinated following the Regime's fall, Carter attempted to stop it but was caught by the protectors of the timeline and imprisoned for three years. As soon as he got out, Booster, again, went to visit his friend before his death, this time only warning him it would happen without directly interfering.
As Booster had foreseen, Kord was executed by the League of Assassins, with Booster teleporting to be at his best friend's side in his final moments. After Kord's death, his remaining fortune and assets are transferred over to Carter, as well as money being given over to the museum where Carter had stolen his costume, allowing him to formally be Booster Gold.
Booster later appears to encourage the young Jaime Reyes over the faith his late friend had over the youth to be the new Blue Beetle. With Amazo attacking Delhi and already killing many, Booster arrives with Beetle but is knocked away by a blast from Amazo. Nonetheless, Amazo is flung into space and destroyed at the moon.
After Amazo's destruction, Booster accompanies the Teen Titans to help with their recruitment effort, which starts with Blue Beetle. Unfortunately, Beetle is kidnapped by Lobo, and Booster steals one of Batman's spaceships to give chase. Once they meet Blue Beetle, Metron informs Booster and the Titans that a battle threatening the universe is about to occur between the Red Lanterns and Green Lanterns, the source being Starro the Conqueror being dragged into the fray by the Atrocitus.
Aiding the Green Lanterns, the Titans are still outnumbered and are forced to retreat back to Oa. Unlike the others that aim to rescue the Green Lanterns possessed by Starro's spores, Beetle chooses to go straight for Starro itself, and Booster chooses to accompany Reyes for his fight. Midway through the trip, however, Booster foresees his own death.
As he and Jaime approach Starro, he realizes that Jaime has to separate himself from his scarab to kill the creature. Jaime soon loses consciousness from the oxygen loss, but Booster refuses to allow the youth to die and passes his own oxygen mask to Reyes, giving orders to Skeets to bring Jaime back to Oa. An alternate timeline Booster Gold later arrives with the late Ted Kord, who repeats that, while Booster's fate cannot be changed, they might as well be together until the end. In peace, Booster quietly dies with his best friend at his side.
The alternate timeline Booster Gold is also the one that brings the Legion of Super-Heroes from the future to rescue a stranded Superboy and Wonder Girl.
