Teenaged civilian Mickey Malone was the Phantom Eagle, a masked pilot who fought against the Axis Powers during World War II.

In 1942, while still a civilian, young Mickey Malone designed and built a warplane, in a cave. This plane was lighter, faster, and more nimble than similar single-engine fighters of its time. He then adopted a secret identity.

Later in his career,[citation needed] Malone enlisted in the United States Army, and still maintained his secret identity as the Phantom Eagle. In this guise he led the famous Phoenix Squadron against the enemies of the Allied forces.

By 1948, Mickey Malone, as the celebrated Phantom Eagle, had been appointed Guardian of the Airways by the International Airlines, and tasked with keeping the world's airways free for travel and commerce.[3]

  • This version of the Phantom Eagle, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
  • The Phantom Eagle plane was built in a hidden mountain cavern, about ten miles from the U.S. Army air base where Mickey Malone was a civilian maintenance worker.
  • Mickey's "Phantom Eagle" fighter plane looks very much like a Bell P-39 Airacobra, a low-altitude fighter-bomber introduced in 1941.
