Synopsis for "A Failed World"
The Midnighter returns from a mission and finds Void waiting for him. She teleports him to the future and shows him a ruined London where the Carrier has crashed into the city. He immediately surmised that he is sent here to avert a disaster that created this dystopian world, in which Void confirms. She reveals that she is too weak to fix this catastrophe and she cannot even tell him what made this ruined future to happen because she is forbidden to tell him; Midnighter must find the answers on his own with little time given by Void.
Midnighter begin searching for anyone for information before he runs across the Mercs. He dispatches Brutus and Hellslayer before finally forcing Razer to surrender and demanding answers for the state of the world. Razer explains that she doesn't know the specifics but she and her team were in London on an assignment when they witnessed the sky crackling with energy before unknown post-humans battled each other over not just London but across the planet, destroying whole cities, in what the survivors called "Armageddon." In the aftermath, the survivors are mostly superhumans as many of the "norms" died out; although Razer claims that not all the normal people died out but disappeared in the "Rapture". Razer further explains that there are survivors who sought shelter in the Carrier where they have food and energy, in which she and the Mercs were planning to raid it.
Midnighter then realizes that Razer's friends may have breached the Carrier's backup power reactors and he must get inside before what is left of England is rendered into a nuclear crater. Before he leaves Razer, she asks Midnighter why the Authority failed to save their world in which he doesn't have an answer. He makes his way to the Carrier and finds his team, who are without Jenny Quarx and the Doctor, fighting the Bounty Hunters, who want to hijack the Carrier and take them off Earth despite the shiftship's damaged state. After Midnighter helps his team in defeating the Bounty Hunters, the future Authority quickly learns Midnighter is from the past and explains what they can remember about what happened on Armageddon.
The Authority first received reports of an worldwide incident (in which they were not sure what started it) when something shattered the Carrier's containment field around the baby universe that served as the Carrier's power source. To prevent the baby universe from expanding and threatening to destroy their universe, Jenny Quarx embraced the baby universe and disappeared with it to parts unknown. The team are certain that Jenny did not die, as she cannot die until the 21st century does and if she does she would have been reborn somewhere, and they do not know where she is. The Doctor slowed the Carrier's descent from completely destroying London, but due to the carnage wrecked across the planet, Habib went mad and wandered off soon after the crash. His team were unable to find him. Everyone except Midnighter were also physically affected by Armageddon: Swift's wings were damaged in the crash. Apollo cannot absorb solar energies and he is a shell of his former self. The Engineer is limited to nine pints of liquid machinery in her body. Hawksmoor's connections to the cities, which are either destroyed or in ruins, left him "changed" in which he isn't certain what the implications are.
Since the crash, most of the Carrier's technology is nonfunctional in which the Authority lacks communication with the outside world and they cannot even access the Bleed from seeking help from other dimensions or worlds; the Authority are stranded in London. The team turned the Carrier into a place of refuge for a few hundred human survivors, in which the Engineer refurbished the Carrier's upper levels with life support systems where hostile intruders cannot reach them.
Hardball regains consciousness and breached the reactor core in an vain attempt to use the released energy to pierce the dimensional barrier and allow him to go to his home. With no time left, Apollo decides to fly the reactor into the atmosphere. He kisses a heartfelt goodbye to Midnighter before soaring into the sky where the reactor explodes into a huge explosion and seemingly killing Apollo. Just then, Void returns and teleports Midnighter back to the present day.
Midnighter shares his dire adventure in the future to his present team. The Authority are not too concerned about Armageddon in which they see it as no different from their countless exploits dealing with preventable world-ending threats which they have all succeeded. With Midnighter's information they are self-assured they can prevent Armageddon from happening. But Midnighter does not share their enthusiasm and he tells his husband that "all it takes is for us to fail once."
