Synopsis for "Past Imperfect"
In Los Angeles, the Midnighter attempts to stop a young woman, who was held hostage before her kidnappers were killed by Midnighter, from committing suicide. She is terrified of him however and claims that he has "killed God". Midnighter tries to reassure her again, but only for the woman to pitches herself from a window onto the street below. Midnighter then returns to his Los Angeles apartment, where he finds his daughter Jenny Quantum waiting for him. Jenny gives him a StormWatch disk that has encrypted files, which include details on the Midnighter's life prior to assuming his current alias. Midnighter brings the disk to a computer hacker named Chester and convinces him use the information to create an identity for himself. When Chester completes his task, he asks why the Midnighter chose him for the job. Midnighter tells him that he required someone expendable, then reveals that he knows about Chester's history with prepubescent girls. As Chester tries to defend his actions, the Midnighter snaps his neck. Midnighter then returns to Mindy's hideout where she gives him an envelope containing ID's and files that was provided by Jenny. Midnighter examine the file and inspects a Indiana driver's license. The name on the license is Lucas Trent.
Meanwhile, in the town of Harmony, Indiana, a man named Bellwether walks down the street. His face is featureless but for the colorful markings of the United States flag. People give him a wide berth as he walks down the street. A woman passes by him. She too has no face but for the stars and bars of the flag. Later, an older man with similar features notices a tattered American flag hanging over a grocery. He goes inside and kills the stock boy responsible for displaying "damaged goods".
The Midnighter changes out his costume for civilian attire and hitches a ride by a man name Brian Dorsett to Harmony, Indiana – "Gateway to the Heartland".

- Henry Bendix is the former leader of StormWatch and the man responsible for erasing the Midnighter's past.
- At one point, Midnighter tells Jenny, "Don't you have another parent to disappoint?" He is speaking of his husband Apollo.
- Judge Fury from Welcome to Tranquility makes a cameo in this issue showing on television, behind bars.

- Travis Lanham's name is mis-spelled "Tarvis Lanham" in this issue.
- Midnighter is rarely seen without his mask, but spend a good deal of time unmasked in this issue.
- The character of Chester may have been inspired by a Hustler Magazine comic strip entitled "Chester the Molester", which ran throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s.
- A Tom Strong action figure can be seen on Chester's cluttered kitchen table. Tom Strong is a character created by Alan Moore and featured in his own titular series published by America's Best Comics (ABC), an imprint of DC Comics.
