Two Annapolis classmates, and romantic rivals, are commissioned as ensigns, and assigned to the same P.T.Boat and the same bunkhouse, in the South Pacific Ocean. They don't get along.

As part of an effort to bottle up a Japanese task group within the harbor of Tombaji, the P.T.Boat jointly commanded by Perry Tobias and Paul Harvey sinks a Japanese destroyer. But Imperial reinforcements are called in, including battleships. The P.T. officers are able to detect the message, in morse code, by tuning in the signal interference it makes on Ensign Tobias' unauthorized AM radio. This alerts them to the approaching enemy ships. The speedboat then races into the oncoming formation, and torpedoes a second destroyer, which also sinks in the Tombaji harbor mouth. In the process the PT Boat crew is wiped out, except for Harvey and Tobias, who has at least one bullet wound.

Harvey gets Tobias safely to a hospital, and as soon as he is out of surgery, they immediately resume arguing about their maybe-girlfriend, Dorothy.
