The Minutemen, also known as the New Minutemen, was the a group of vigilantes battling crime in New York City throughout the early and mid 20th century. Founded and headed by Captain Metropolis, they were eventually succeeded by the Crimebusters when they got older.
History
The Minutemen was formed by Captain Metropolis in the mid-1900s. He actively recruited vigilantes to the team and went out of his way to reach out to the first superhero Hooded Justice through a police officer he believed was the hero's informant. Unbeknownst to Metropolis at the time, the officer was Hooded Justice, an African-American man named Will Reeves. Though Will's wife discouraged him from joining the Minutemen, after having an affair with Captain Metropolis, Reeves agreed to join, giving the team legitimacy.
The team did press conferences and photoshoots and associated with one another. Though Hooded Justice wanted to focus the team's effort on a white supremacist group called Cyclops that threatened Black Americans, Captain Metropolis backtracked on his promise to Reeves and directed the team to more lighthearted criminal activity.
Eventually, the team disbanded due to political reasons. A second team was formed years later called the Crimebusters, but this too would fail.
In 2019, the second season of the documentary series American Hero Story was dedicated to dramatizing the publicly known information involving the Minutemen, focusing on Hooded Justice as its main character.
Notes
- Though actors portraying the Minutemen in a television series first appeared in It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice, the Minutemen themselves wouldn't appear as a team until This Extraordinary Being.
