Scott Free, his wife Big Barda, and Oberon move into Bailey, New Hampshire, looking to keep a low profile, away from superhero affairs and showbiz. However, Oberon tries to convince Scott that he is no average man. After all, he is a New God. But Scott is determined to live an average human life, setting a fix-it shop in the neighborhood.

In no time, Barda meets their neighbors, the Ferbels, who invite them to have dinner that same evening. But those plans are interrupted by Doctor Bedlam, who attacks Scott in his shop and drags him through a Boom Tube. Barda and Oberon go to the Ferbels' house, assuming Scott is still at the shop, but they are shocked to find Doctor Bedlam inside the house, pretending to be a friend of the family.
