Synopsis for the 1st Story
After Orion has beaten him up, Scott is in bed, covered in bandages, with Barda looking after him. Lightray is in their house, saying he won't leave until he has spoken with Scott. Scott gets up and Lightray refers from the Highfather Orion that he is declared an enemy of the people of New Genesis and that he is given a choice: execution or trial as an agent of Darkseid. While he makes coffee, Scott chooses the trial and, as location, that very house. After this, Barda repeatedly punches Lightray in the face.
In the evening, Barda and Scott watch television. Barda suggests they should buy at least a veggie tray for the occasion. Meanwhile, Scott has visions on TV: he sees the usual "Darkseid is" sentence and the recently deceased Granny Goodness saying she drew the face of god, but no-one knows the face of god.
The following day, Mister Miracle performs what he believes to be his last escape show for some time: he enters a barrel which is immediately shattered by a moving train.
Back home, Highfather Orion arrives through a Boom Tube, with Lightray and another God as witnesses of the trial. Scott sits down, and Orion begins the trial. He claims that by the laws of The Source, he's entitled to be accuser, defender and judge in the trial, as doing otherwise would be an insult to the wisdom of the Highfather. Orion says that, although they managed to hold off Darkseid's armies, the war wages on in their minds (since Scott implied that at least one between Orion and himself is possessed by the Anti-Life Equation Darkseid got his hands on). Orion orders Scott to answer to his question with a clear "TRUE" or "FALSE" answer, with no in-betweens.
Scott admits to thinking Darkseid possessed him with the Anti-Life Equation and to accusing the Highfather of suffering the same. After some forcing, he also admits to thinking Orion is in fact an agent of Darkseid and that he isn't one. Orion argues that an agent of Darkseid would deny being an agent of Darkseid and that he may even not know he is. Scott agrees that may be possible. Scott asks Orion if all this is a trap, to which he answers positively. Scott also says his real name is not Scott or Mister Miracle, but he can't remember it because he was too little when he was given to Darkseid. Scott then admits to hating his own father, Orion, New Genesis, Apokolips, his career, his childhood, his life, himself, God. All this hate made him doubt Orion, accuse him of treason, try to kill himself because he wanted to escape everything. Eventually, Scott admits to being hate. Since the Anti-Life Equation is hate, Orion argues, then Scott is the Anti-Life Equation. This time, instead of answering, Scott screams as he beats Orion furiously. Barda manages to calm him down, while Orion, eating a carrot from the veggie tray, deems Scott "guilty": in three days he will be executed in the throne room.
While the "audience" leaves, Barda keeps embracing Scott, who says "I can't...", to which she replies, "I know".
