Synopsis for the 1st Story

Some months after Orion's supposed death, Scott takes Barda to the Hospital, since she's about to give birth to their son.

She is taken into a room and checked on by obstetricians. Suddenly, the couple hears a Boom Tube activating: it's the Furies, who decided to check on the future New God. Scott meets them and tells them they can't enter the room. Back inside, Scott suggests some orotund names to Barda for their son, to which she always says no. When the machine stops signalling the baby's heartbeat, Scott immediately asks for help to the obstetricians. They turn Barda on the side, and the beeping resumes.

Checking on the Furies, Scott receives by one of them, Bernadeth, the Fahren-Knife, a weapon able to cut Barda's skin, in case it may be useful. Barda tells Scott that it's probably a trap, since she knows that weapon makes the victims burn from the inside. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Scott is now the new Highfather, as he's asked what the armies of New Genesis should do against an army from Apokolips. Eventually, the couple decides the son will be called Jacob, from Jacob's Ladder, a ladder that took to heaven from Granny Goodness's X-Pit.

It's time for Barda to give birth. Unfortunately, Jacob has the cord around his neck, preventing him from breathing. The medics try to cut it, but their tools don't seem to work on Barda's skin. Scott then uses the Fahren-Knife and saves his kid.

Later, Scott thanks Bernadeth for the arm, even though she adds she'll use it on him to kill him eventually.
