The Monster Society[1][2] was a loose network of Venusian Worms who took control of many hosts across the United States of America.

History

Sometime after Billy Batson had moved in with the Bromfield family in Fairfield, Mister Mind took control of Sarge Steel, who despite his great mental strength[2], became Mind's puppet. Together with a scientist known as Herb, also a host, at the Department of Metahuman Affairs the two launched Mister Atom to explode in the vicinity of the Captain Marvels in order to kill them, but instead Atom exploded in Fairfield, destroying the town and killing an untold number of innocents.[3]

Furious and distraught, Billy and Mary tore through the departments stronghold in order to reprimand Mister Mind, but were thwarted by Superman who though empathetic to their cause, could not locate enough evidence to pin the destruction of Fairfield on Steel. Meanwhile, several other Venusians began to take control of seemingly regular people in a trek across America with the goal to activate nuclear weapons and eradicating humanity.[1]

Now armed with a weapon created by Professor Bibbowski, Mary tried to destroy Mister Mind who had nearly taken control of the President of the United States, who instead took control of a soldier named Agent Klein to gain access to the armory of the D.M.A.. Though Mind was tracked down by the Marvels, the weapon he found in the armory was a suit that allowed him similar strength to the two champions and did battle with them as his fellow Monster Society members continued their journey, gaining access to a nuclear submarine and atomic bomb planes from the United States Navy and Airforce respectively.[1]

During the ensuing battle, Impulse and Max Mercury thwarted two Monster Society members from launching atomic bombs as Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan helped the Marvel Family deal Mister Mind's final assault on the capital, now using his powers to warp the perception of all heroes involved. Soon however, Mister Mind found himself outsmarted and defeated by the Marvels and after one last gambit failed, he was killed by Sarge Steel, who announced that the rest of the Monster Society were also dead, ending their brief but horrific reign of terror.[4]

Notes

  • This incarnation of the Monster Society was only named in narration.
  • While the Monster Society is traditionally portrayed as the Marvel Family's most iconic foes teamed up, this version instead consists primarily of mind controlled hosts, only one of which, Sinclair Batson, was an enemy of the Marvels prior to his possession.
