After a giant monster collapsed in Gotham City during the Night of the Monster Men, a community of "monsters" grew up in the cracks, and the region was dubbed Monstertown.

History

The neighborhood takes its name not only from the monstrous corpse dominating its skyline, but from the people who dwell within it. Because the corpse had mutative properties, many of the region's residents, both human and animal, were turned into freakish monsters, causing A.R.G.U.S. to quarantine the area for study.[1][2] Early in the quarantine, Anarky established a small civilization underneath the neighborhood.[3]

In addition to those mutated by the monster corpse, other "monsters", such as Tusk and Killer Croc, came to live in Monstertown, making it a safe-haven of sorts for their kind. The neighborhood's poor state meant that it avoided Bane's takeover of Gotham, giving it time to heal and regrow.[4]
