Mortimer Coolidge is the Eel, a surface-born enemy of Aquaman and his wife Mera.
History
Hunting Mera
During the Atlantean Civil War, Eel was hired by the fascist dictator of Atlantis Corum Rath to hunt down and eliminate Mera. Rath hired Coolidge so that he would have political deniability, since Eel was surface-born nobody would be able to link him with Mera's death. Coolidge hunted Mera to Amnesty Bay, the home town of Aquaman, where he attacked in broad daylight at the docks. After a short fight Coolidge was beaten by Mera, who used her superior knowledge to take care of the villain. After the battle, Eel was taken into custody by the Justice League as he was too powerful to be contained by the normal authorities.[1]
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Hydrokinesis: The Eel is an adept manipulator of water. He is able to form a coating of water molecules around himself which award him enhanced strength and durability, and also make him hard to grab. He is also able to make water so dense that it is as damaging as bullets. Although he was a strong hydrokinetic, Mera expressed belief that at full power she could take him down in seconds.[1]
Abilities
- Hand-to-Hand Combat (Basic): Coolidge was able to match the highly skilled Mera in martial arts for a short time.[1]
- Swimming: Mortimer has shown the ability to swim underwater while fighting an opponent.[1]
Notes
- The Eel was created by Will Pfeifer and Patrick Gleason, first appearing in Aquaman (Volume 6) #21. However, in the Prime Earth continuity, The Eel first appeared as part of the New 52 DC Universe in Mera: Queen of Atlantis #1 by Dan Abnett and Lan Medina.
