Synopsis for Whistler: "Origin of the Whistler"

Mac Shane, editor of the Daily Record, gets a visit from Mallory Drake. The latest of many such visits, with Drake asking if there's any openings on the crime beat. In exasperation, Shane assents to hire him, mainly to give Drake enough rope to hang himself. An excited Drake kisses his new boss in gratitude and runs to tell the good news to his brother, "world's greatest jazz whistler," Jerry. Unfortunately, some gangsters come in to get an answer from the owner of the nightclub about putting a gambling parlor in his backroom. When he refuses, and Jerry joins him in trying to fight them off, the hoods gun both men down. The dying Jerry tells Mallory to use his own whistling prowess to battle the forces of evil. Thus he creates a dual identity to stalk the night, the Whistler, and finds the gang's boss, Flynn, in the phone book. The Whistler approaches Flynn's house and freezes the guards in fear with a particular three-note whistle, long enough for him to knock them out with this fists. After getting inside he finds Flynn and captures him too, then calls the police, not giving his name but emitting his paralyzing whistle over the phone. At the paper, Shane's amazed at Drake delivering the story of such a powerful gang boss's capture, but refuses to believe "any malarkey about a Whistler".
