Synopsis for The Whistler: "The Murder of Mischa Lanz"

Mallory Drake, violin fan and secretly the Whistler, spends his night off at a concert by violinist Mischa Lanz. However in the middle of the act Lanz is shot dead, and Drake runs to find a phone. The police show up and quickly finger Igor, the kettle drummer, as the only one who was in the area the bullet came from. Igor dives through a window, refusing to take the rap. Lenly, Lanz' manager, offers a $500 reward, which Drake finds suspicious for someone who just lost his "meal ticket".

Drake sneaks into the empty concert hall as the Whistler and finds somebody else skulking around the concert hall in the dark. After freezing them with his trademark whistle, the masked avenger finds out it's Igor, come back to investigate the scene of the crime. They find a rigged-up gun hidden in Igor's drum, which convinces Whistler that Igor's been framed. He tells Igor to give himself up to the police and he'll wait around for the real criminal who's bound to come and collect the evidence, but the crook gets the drop on him instead.

Whistler comes to at the mercy of Lenly, who killed Lanz out of jealousy that his own talents as a violinist were never recognized. He's going to kill Whistler the same way he killed Lanz: with a planted gun, its hammer held back by a sliver of glass, that was shattered by a violin hitting a high note (a record, in this case). The hero shatters the glass with a high-pitched whistle and wounds Lenly in the arm, making him easy prey for Whistler when he slips his bonds. Mac Shane's impressed by the story, but repeats his demand that Mallory Drake find out who the Whistler really is.
