Synopsis for Steve Wood: "The Finger of Suspicion"
A Mr. Gardyce comes to Steve Wood for help as he's being blackmailed, and Steve hates blackmailers in particular. It's Gardyce's former business partner, Polder. Steve goes to confront Polder, but after he leaves the room somebody leans through the window and shoots Polder. Because of the blazing row they had, the butler easily suspects Steve of the murder, and when Inspector Flanagan shows up he finds the gunshot matches Steve's piece which is suspiciously lying on the floor. The waterfront detective flees through a window before Flanagan can slap the cuffs on him.
Steve's secretary Sally volunteers to help Flanagan find her wayward boss, since she knows most of his hideouts. They do indeed find Steve Wood hiding out in a shack under a pier (to Sally's surprise, as she was trying to lead Flanagan on a wild goose chase for her boss's sake). The private dick manages to convince Flanagan to give him a brief reprieve, as he's pretty sure he's worked out who framed him. Indeed, an assailant tries to sneak into the hideout to silence Steve, which turns out to be Gardyce, the only person who knew that Steve would be at Polder's place and had a chance to pocket his gun.
