New Gods (Volume 3) #1 is an issue of the series New Gods (Volume 3) with a cover date of February, 1989.

Synopsis for "Hordes"

The forces of Apokolips invade Atlanta, Georgia, lead by Kalibak, following the trail of some Earthlings who possess a fraction of the Anti-Life Equation. But Orion, Lightray, and other gods from New Genesis arrive to protect the civilians. Orion and Kalibak clash in combat, while the other Genesisians fight the horde of Parademons and Lightray saves Eve Donner, one of the possessors. The invading forces retreat, leaving a bomb that kills some of the New Genesis' heroes. Orion destroys it with the help of the Mother Box and the Astro-Force, stopping it from decimating the whole city.

The New Gods return to New Genesis, where Orion lashes about Darkseid's arrogance and obsession with the Anti-Life. Highfather tells him to still his emotions, but Orion walks away, refusing to listen to him. Lightray talks to him and makes him enter a reason, convincing him to take Forager's corpse, who died during their last encounter with the Anti-Life Aspect, to the insect people.

However, during the chaos of the battle, Darkseid manages to kidnap one of the Equation possessors and takes him to Apokolips. There, Darkseid and Desaad carry out the extraction of the Equation from the Earthling. With the man's life essence transferred to an Anti-Life Crystal and his body reduces to nothing, Darkseid now possesses the secret of the Anti-Life Equation in his hands.
