Quote1 Oh, come one! All that killing and you think there's always a reason for it? An excuse, maybe... I'm afraid I don't accept the necessity of killing, Orion, however you may rationalize it. Whatever the motive, they all wind up equally dead. Quote2

New Gods (Volume 3) #15 is an issue of the series New Gods (Volume 3) with a cover date of April, 1990.

Synopsis for "Savage Soul!"

Darkseid confronts the resurrected DeSaad for his constant machinations impersonating Darkseid on Earth. The lord of Apokolips always knows when his servants scheme on his backs, and he has no patience to allow it any further. So Darkseid destroys DeSaad's Emotion Detector, the machine he used to feed on other's suffering, and his only source of pleasure in Apokolips. However, Darkseid overlooked the miniature version DeSaad managed to hide.

DeSaad uses the miniature machine to follow Orion's footsteps on Earth, while the Genesisian helps David Lincoln investigate a serial killer named the Poet. The killer left a trail of eight female victims so far, in each case leaving a page of a poetry book as his signature. Orion accompanies David to the house of a widowed man whose wife, confined to a wheelchair, turned out to be the eighth victim. The reports of the series of killings spread all over the city, and DeSaad feeds of the inhabitants' terror. Orion senses the chain of terror, and he sets off to track this killer by himself, putting David and the Police Department in a race against time to find the butcher before Orion.

But DeSaad is faster than any of them, as he finds the killer by smelling his hate. The killer, disguised as a gym janitor, follows his ninth victim to her apartment and kills her in the shower, and DeSaad savors the moment. David tries to refrain Orion from killing The Poet. But Orion doesn't understand Earth's laws, and he is determined to destroy the psycho.

While investigating, David Lincoln finds out that all victims, minus the one in a wheelchair, are connected to the Atlantic Gym. So he heads over there right away, and Orion follows him. Orion confronts the killer himself. But DeSaad, who wants to savor the victim's terror again, feeds the Poet with enough power to confront Orion, turning him into a monster. But DeSaad's power is still no match for Orion, and the creature is defeated, turning him back to human form. However, even though they caught the killer, Dave sees there's a loose end in this case. It turns out the Poet didn't kill the wheelchair victim. The real killer was her husband, who decided to imitate the Poet's methods to hide his crime.
