New Gods (Volume 3) #24 is an issue of the series New Gods (Volume 3) with a cover date of March, 1991.

Synopsis for "A Matter of Survival!"

While having a peaceful moment enjoying Earth's nature, the Forever People decide to reason with the ones responsible for polluting the air and rivers. They go to a Nortech Industries plant, but the guards brush them off for being "hippies." The situation escalates quickly into a fight, even though the Forever People don't want to harm them. The scene draws the attention of Orion, who interferes and puts an end to the fighting. When the guards realize these people are not enemies (at least the ones still conscious), the New Gods leave the facility, planning to return more peacefully at another time.

After unsuccessfully trying to get an appointment with Mr. Rodman, Orion leads the way crashing through the walls of the facility, demanding an audience with the man in charge. The guards, in fear of the raging monster, accept his demands. The Forever People and Orion enter Rodman's office, who is not interested in listening to these "hippies." But his attitude changes when he sees Beautiful Dreamer, and her face reminds him of his once beloved wife.

However, DeSaad is watching the situation from Apokolips, planning an attack against the Forever People and Orion. He seizes control of a man working at the nuclear laboratory and releases all the radioactive wastes, causing an explosion in the facility. The New Gods head to the scene, and they try to prevent a secondary eruption that could be bigger and deadlier. Even though they temporarily contain the disaster, Rodman blames them for it. Still, Serifan can see his mind, and thus, the kind person he was in the past. When the tempers cool down, Rodman says he's the only one who knows the codes to shut down the reactor. Just before he reveals them, Tyrus, a killer sent by DeSaad, shoots Rodman. The Forever People can only watch horrified and listen to DeSaad's words, demanding them to exchange Dreamer's daughter, Maya, to stop the disaster.

Notes

  • The presence of Forever People in this issue was retconned later on New Gods (Volume 4) #14. In that issue, the Forever People escape from Adon and return to Earth, making every one of their appearances between Forever People #11 (1972) and New Gods (Volume 4) #14 (1997) no longer canon. Moreover, Maya's existence was erased from continuity.
