No, Big Bear, we did not win... Look at the land around us. Look at the trees that will never grow again--and the flowers that will never bloom, and a sky that makes you forget that it is supposed to be blue. No, we did not win. We just haven't lost everything...yet.

Synopsis for "The Second Pact!"

With Mr. Rodman dying and the nuclear reactor about to explode, the only way for the Forever People to avert the disaster is to give Maya to DeSaad. But they refuse to accept his demands. When Mr. Rodman opens his eyes, he sees the Black Racer, ready to take him to the afterlife. In some sort of limbo, Rodman talks with the Racer about the life he had. Rodman remembers meeting his wife Ellen at protests against the Vietnam war. But in time, he changed from being an activist to being the same type of businessman they fought and protested. Still, his feelings of remorse are not enough to save his life.

Meanwhile, Orion chases Tyrus, the Apokoliptian who shot Rodman. But Tracker distracts Orion while Tyrus escapes. After he deals with the dog, Orion returns to the reactor and decides to enter to deactivate it before the explosion, even though that might kill him. Refusing to leave their friend alone, the Forever People gather around the Mother Box and call in for the Infinity Man. Together, they reach the control room, where they find the Black Racer entering the deactivation codes.

With the disaster averted and DeSaad defeated, the Forever People return outside and find that the radiation still had its consequences, as all the surrounding nature lies devoid of life.

Notes

  • The presence of Forever People in this issue was retconned later on New Gods (Volume 4) #14. In that issue, the Forever People escape from Adon and return to Earth, making every one of their appearances between Forever People #11 (1972) and New Gods (Volume 4) #14 (1997) no longer canon. Moreover, Maya's existence was erased from continuity.
