New Gods (Volume 4) #9 is an issue of the series New Gods (Volume 4) with a cover date of July, 1996.

Synopsis for "The Lord of Destruction"

Long ago, the Old Gods engaged in an endless conflict that gave birth to the Shadow Elements, which caused the destruction of the Old Gods. The Shadow Elements ruled the cosmos but died when the New Gods of New Genesis and Apokolips ascended to power, and The Source kept the remaining Shadows controlled.

Now, the Source is weak, and Mother Herrae prepares the spell to contain the beast S'ivaa, the most ferocious Shadow Element of all.

Metron shows up at the Asylum of the Gods and heals Highfather using the Source Chamber. Orion departs the group and heads off to face the deranged Lightray. Showcasing his unrestrained power, Lightray cuts a piece of the floating city and drops it on Orion. In a moment of insanity, Orion loses control of himself and unleashes his dark side against Lightray, but he recovers before he could kill his friend.

Orion and Highfather lock Lightray in a cell at the Asylum, but Metron can't heal him because the corruption in Lightray is too strong.

Elsewhere, Mother Herrae struggles to keep the spell of containment, but she loses control, and S'ivaa, the Destroyer of Worlds, awakens.
