This easternmost Canadian province comprises two main parts: the island of Newfoundland off the country's eastern coast, and Labrador on the mainland to the northwest of the island.

The exploration of North America by Norsemen began in the late 10th Century when they explored areas of the North Atlantic, colonized Greenland, and created a short-term settlement in Canada they called Vinland (probably Newfoundland).[1]
