Duke Nigel was the archnemesis of Steam Lantern.
History
A leading scientist and inventor on his dimension's Earth, Nigel Fortenberry was the driving force behind his world's industrial revolution, leading to the steam-driven technology present throughout his world. Unknown to his people, Nigel had come into contact with a mechanical being known as the Anti-Monitor, a creature that had been devouring their entire universe. Nigel used his gift of invention to create a ray designed to cut into another dimension, giving the Anti-Monitor an entire new universe to feed on if it agreed to leave the Earth alone. With the bargain struck and the ray complete, Nigel prepared to banish the monster forever. What he had not counted on was the local costumed vigilante, Steam Lantern, attacking the Anti-Monitor at the exact moment Nigel fired his beam, making it appear the hero was the one who banished the creature.
