Nightwing (Volume 2) #69 is an issue of the series Nightwing (Volume 2) with a cover date of July, 2002. It was published on May 8, 2002.
Synopsis for "Ins & Outs"
Alfred and Nightwing are looking at some of the old Batcave maps from before the earthquake in order to discover the way the person who killed Vesper Fairchild and framed Bruce Wayne for the crime, entered the cave. The maps are out of date and Alfred suggests using smoke in the cave tunnels to see the places where the smoke comes out but Nightwing points out that the smoke would give away the location of the entrance to the batcave. Robin appears from out of nowhere and suggests to use a kind of smoke that can only be seen with infrared lights and all agree that the plan might work out.
Alfred and Robin stay in the batcave and start the smoke machine while Nightwing looks on the outside for any smoke leaks on the surface. After some trial and errors, Nightwing finds a big leak coming from an abandoned barn at Wayne Manor and upon entering, he notices that someone has forced the wooden floor and opened it to reach the hole in the ground. Nightwing informs Robin and Alfred about the barn and they go there looking for clues.
At that moment in Bludhaven, the some members of the Bludhaven Police Department are ready to arrest a wanted man and among them is Amy Rohrbach, Dick's partner, who is questioned about the whereabouts of her partner. Moments later, they break inside the place where the criminal is with a girl. They try to arrest him but he offers them to share some of the stolen money he has in exchange for his freedom. The officers consider the deal and they are more than willing to accept it, with the exception of Rohrbach. She doesn't like the idea and she confronts her team despite being completely outnumbered. There is a shooting in the place and after a while, Amy comes out with the bag of money as evidence and she leaves the place leaving only the unknown girl alive.
Meanwhile, Robin and Alfred find a piece of fabric in the barn and they took it to the batcave for further analysis. They discover that the fabric is made of a high-tensile polymer, good for cave crawling. Nightwing is getting deeper into the tunnel until the intercom signal is lost and he can't communicate back with Alfred and Tim. However, in the deepest part of the tunnel, Nightwing discovers some kind of destroyed electronic device just where Bruce's security system is located. Alfred and Robin are worried because Nightwing doesn't reply to the calls and just when they go out looking for him, Nightwing shows up inside the batcave, through the tunnel, which is now confirmed the way the intruder used to get inside the cave. The only mystery now is to learn more about the destroyed electronic device.
