History
Leading the Doom Patrol
During his time as a doctor, Niles Caulder recruited and saved metahumans with special powers who suffered accidents: Rita Farr, an elegant woman with elastic powers, Larry Trainor, a powerful radioactive man who could release himself as a negative spirit, and Cliff Steele, an angry robot with a human brain. Niles formed the Doom Patrol with the trio, beginning to dedicate themselves to protecting a world that rejected them from different threats like the Brotherhood of Evil, a team of supervillains, and Niles served as a mentor to the Patrol, teaching them values about humanity while carrying out heroic missions. During their adventures, the Doom Patrol welcomed young Gar Logan, a boy who could transform into any animal, into their team.[2][1]
After the Doom Patrol was kidnapped, Niles contacted Gotham City's nocturne vigilante, Batman, sending Gar to help him, thinking that the team's old enemy, General Immortus, an immortal supervillain, had kidnapped them. but in reality it was Mad Mod, real name Neil Richards, a villain who could change reality, but was defeated by Batman and the Doom Patrol. During a mission in Paris, France, the Doom Patrol fought against the maniacal General Zahl and his troops, however, when Zahl threatened the team into surrendering, the Doom Patrol attempted to save the hostage without success, but they detained Zahl and saved Paris. After failing to save the hostage, Niles and the Doom Patrol officially split up, going their separate ways.[1][2]
A Last Adventure
Years later, Niles found himself living alone in the Doom Patrol headquarters, watching reports on the team's adventures and their unexpected disappearance, frustrating Niles by harassing his team until he was surprised by the team's old arch-enemy, The Brain, and his faithful gorilla assistant, Mallah, listening to their mockery of him for crying his sorrows. Brain ordered Mallah to shoot Niles, who was able to defend himself with his technological wheelchair, protecting himself with a force field that was destroyed by the gorilla and before Niles was killed, Batman intervened, stopping the duo of villains with the help of Niles, discovering from Brain that the rest of the team was in danger, deciding to reunite them.
In a manor, Niles and Batman go in search of Rita, who had gained weight and become reluctant to use her powers, before protecting her from the attack of the creatures Ir, Ur and Ar, who formed the Mutant Trio, and attempted to ask for her. help to attack the mutants, although Rita still refused. After receiving advice from Batman, Rita returned to being Elasti-Girl, saving Niles and stopping the mutants. The next to search was Larry who was in a circus as an attraction, defending him from the amalgamated villain, Animal Vegetable Mineral Man, whom they managed to defeat and Batman forced Larry to return to the team. Finally, Niles and company went for Cliff, receiving his support to face the powerful robot, Arsenal, a battle that made Cliff choose to return to the team, reforming the Doom Patrol, before being captured along with Batman by General Zahl.
On Zahl's ship, the Doom Patrol and Batman lost their weapons and powers to the soldiers, discovering that Zahl sought to reunite them again so that they would reveal their true colors, forcing Niles to reveal to Batman the truth of their separation after failing to rescue to a Zahl civilian. The Doom Patrol was sent to an island where they received another threat from Zahl, which was that if they wanted to survive, he would blow up the small island of Codsville and if they surrender, Codsville would live, but the team would not, a decision that would be transmitted globally. Accepting the threat, Niles gave the Doom Patrol the choice, learning about how humanity had done good things and all together, the team agreed to sacrifice themselves, so Zahl attempted to activate the bomb, before Batman stopped him, however, Zahl used his cap to activate the real bomb, killing Niles and the Doom Patrol.[2]
Legacy
After the death of the Doom Patrol, Niles and the team would inspire several people in the world, including the civilians of Codsville, who honored them as true superheroes, causing Zahl's defeat when he was defeated by the deceased team. Codsville was renamed Four Heroes to honor the Doom Patrol and Batman remembered his late friends, hoping they would rest in peace.[2]
