Nina Mazursky was a gentle and timid amphibious metahuman gifted with genius intelligence. She was incarcerated and used by A.R.G.U.S. as a member of the Creature Commandos.
History
Origins
Nina Mazursky was born with a rare form of omphalocele wherein her lungs were born on the outside of her body. Her father, the geneticist Dr. Edward Mazursky loved her dearly and committed himself to finding a way for her to have a normal life. As an infant Nina was forced to wear a clunking apparatus to assist with her breathing, but limited her movement somewhat. Her mother didn't think this was any kind of life for her to live, and regretted not taking her daughter off of life support after she was born. Her parents separated and Edward continued to raise his daughter on his own, building progressively larger and better breathing apparatuses as she grew, and trying to give her as normal a life as possible. Unfortunately these devices remained cumbersome for the small child and put too much physical strain on her to move on her own for very long.
Eventually Nina's father used his knowledge of genetic engineering to produce a treatment that he hoped would allow Nina to finally be free of breathing apparatuses: he intended to infuse the DNA of certain aquatic animals into his daughter, hoping it would allow her to handle the excess fluid her lungs produced. Unfortunately the treatment worked too well and Nina was transformed into a fish-like humanoid that could only breath while under water. Still, this change afforded her far more autonomy than she'd had before.
While Nina's father was happy to homeschool his daughter, teaching her multiple languages and an appreciation for the arts, by the time she was an adolescent he enrolled her in a Prep School hoping to give her a chance to socialize with more people. Nina was initially excited about this, but quickly found herself the target of ridicule from the other students. After enduring years of bullying and believing herself to be a burden to her father, Nina ran away from home.
After some time living in isolation in the Star City bay, Nina was spotted by a photographer who's photo of her drew the attention of the media. She was subsequently captured by wildlife services. As she was being dragged off her father pushed his way through the crowd to tell his daughter than he saw her as a gift, not a burden. Edward was then shot and killed by an cop at the scene and Nina, unable to breath or speak out of water, was thrown into a tank and taken away.[2]
