Nix Uotan is the last of the race of beings called "Monitors", who once watched over the Multiverse.
History
Nix Uotan belonged to the advanced race called Monitors, which looked after the once-infinite Multiverse and unlike the rest of his race, truly cared for the betterment of the people who lived in it. Eventually one of them betrayed them and became the Anti-Monitor hell-bent on the multiverse. The heroes of the Multiverse and the Monitors stopped him at a great cost, with Nix being the sole survivor of his race due to being in hibernation at that time. Becoming the lone protector of the Multiverse which now only had 52 universes, he designed an artificial intelligence called Construct to assist him.[1]
Sometime later, an unknown force attacked Earth-48 with modified Monitor weapons, and Nix realized that the multiverse was in peril again. He sent out a call to the heroes of the multiverse to assist him and himself recruited Harbinger, a denizen of Earth-48 to secure the artifacts their enemy was trying to steal in order to gain power.[1] Harbinger herself recruited other heroes for the Monitor but was killed by the Two-Face of Earth-17, who gained the Eternal Key.[2]
The Monitor meanwhile personally went to Earth-44 to recruit Mecha Superman warning him about the coming threat and promising to send him allies. The robot refused to believe him since he was a machine and his world had been peaceful, with Nick sharing all the data he had so he would believe what he said. As he told him to overcome his robotic limitations in order to trust people, Superman replied that he couldn't feel. Nix reminded that he did feel when his creator Clark Kent died, and to remember that in order to gain strength.[3]
Earth-48 was soon destroyed by Two-Face, and Nix had Construct scan the Bleed for survivors after learning of the destruction. Finding Batman of Earth-0, Green Lantern of Earth-13, Wonder Woman of Earth-17, Catwoman of Earth-19 and Robin of Earth-43 adrift in the Bleed, he arrived to save them before Lantern's shield safeguarding them collapsed. Learning what had happened, he located that Two-Face was on Earth-17 and asked Green Lantern to have his allies distract him, while he prepared weapons to take him down.[4]
The heroes however defeated Two-Face on their own and the Monitor took the Eternal Key in his possession. He then warned that an even greater danger was going to threaten the multiverse and told them to be ready.[5] Nix later sent them to Earth-13 in order to join with Supergirl, Zatanna and Lord Zod of Earth-13; Cyborg, the Flash, Zatanna of Earth-0; and Mecha Superman; after they finished fighting the mysterious foe threatening the multiverse.[6]
Doctor Fate of Earth-20 tried warning Nix that a threat was coming for them, but he refused to believe their enemy would know where he was. Upon realizing that he was right, Nix hastily gathered whatever defenses he could. This included Fate himself, Green Arrow of Earth-11 and Power Girl of Earth-31.[7] He also used the Multiversal Orrery to divide his essence into 52 parts. The enemy however gained control of Nil's defenses and killed all the Monitors except one, who deactivated Nil's systems.[8]
Wonder Woman of Earth-17 and the Flash of Earth-0 soon found him in a weakened condition, learning what had happened. Outside, the heroes fought the Nightmare Metallos led by Brainiac of Earth-43.[8] Batman of Earth-0 and Lex Luthor of Earth-19 told him that they needed Nil's defense system, but Batman told them it was impossible since they had been corrupted by Brainiac. Lex suggested using the Eternal Key as the central operating system and using magic to insulate it, which Batman had Earth-0's Zatanna do.[9] With the systems back in his hands, Nix ordered obliteration of the invaders on Nil. After Brainiac's death, he sent the heroes back to their universes, in order to keep an eye out and recruit new allies.[10]
The heroes soon discovered Earth Engines upon multiple universes and realized they must have been intended to create a mind-controlled army capable of defeating the Monitor. Nix arrived on Earth-19's Metropolis and was toold by the heroes what they had learnt. Examining the contraption, he found that it consisted of both magic and technology, while being built with Monitor technology. He agreed with Batman that they must be intended to be activated at once and decided to disable it despite the warnings of Lex of Earth-19 that tampering with it would drive everyone mad. As he proceeded with the task, an energy wave was released from the Earth Engine and drove Nix mad.[11] Nix started attacking everyone and after everyone failed to contain him, Batman told Earth-19's Catwoman to call all heroes they knew.[12]
After they arrived, the magicians used their powers to temporarily calm Nix. He then told Superman of Earth-0 and Mecha Superman to throw the Earth Engine into the Bleed while he opened a portal.[13] The heroes did as he asked, freeing everyone from its maddening influence. He regretted however that the people of the world would still carry the trauma created due to its effects.[14] The heroes soon discovered that the person responsible for the whole thing was Vandal Savage of Earth-19, and defeated him after the new recruit, Hawkgirl of Earth-19, destroyed the suggestion device he was using to control individuals. Nix imprisoned Savage to Nil, deeming him too dangerous, but was unable to extract anything from him.[15]
When the main wave of the "Infinite Crisis" struck as he had anticipated, he started recruiting more champions and setting up bases on the various universes to fight back against the enemy. He also had them send out a call to the "Protectors", in order to help and guide the champions on the battlefield.[16]
