In the 1920s and 1930s, in the Quality Universe, the post-World War I hellscape of Europe spawned a significant number of Central European dictatorships, including: Aryania, Barbaria, Bothnia, Darmania, Dunland, Govania, Jarmania, Kampfland, Latavia, Nordicha, North Germany, Tuvania, Wurtberg, and others. When the Second World War began in earnest, all of these countries were not only admitted to the Axis Powers, but politically annexed and absorbed into Hitler's Nazi Germany. After WWII, none of these nations existed again.
In 1940, the tiny, neutral, democracy of Hatvia was hemmed in on the west by Motler's Germany and on the east by Stalin's Russia. President Hatchec of Hatvia sent a goodwill ambassador to the USA to appeal for U.S. support. Dictator Motler of North Germany sent two agents to knock down the diplomat's airplane, equipping them with an unsafe prototype of an airplane-engine-killing death ray. An American criminologist, Hugh Hazzard, was monitoring airline radio frequencies when the ambassador's plane came under attack. Using a super-powered robot, he flew out to the attack scene, and counterattacked. Both agents were killed, and the passenger airliner was caught and safely landed.
Hazzard then flew to Euroe, directly to Motler's stronghold, a castle atop a cliff beside the ocean, and entered it by plowing into the cliff and digging upward. He confronted Motler, who panicked, backed away through a door, onto a balcony, over the handrail, and onto the rocks far below. The American flying robot departed undetected, and afterwards the cause of the death of the dictator was a mystery.
