The Nuclear Family was a group of androids who gained sentience and outlived their original programming.
History
During the Cold War, a scientist named Eric Shanner, who opposed the idea of nuclear war designed and built a group of androids he named "The Nuclear Family" to demonstrate the harmful effects atomic weapons would have on civilians caught in the blasts. The robots were programmed to behave like a real family and didn't even realize they were machines. However, Shanner had built his creations too well. For when radiological discharge consumed the robots, rather than being destroyed, they somehow absorbed the effects of the blast and its resultant fallout, gaining cognitive capacity and nuclear energy-based powers. The Nuclear Family escaped the test site and set out to find a place where they could feel at home.
