Synopsis for "Heartaches and Heartbreaks!"
While the Omega Men finish their conference with Mama Madame on Rashashoon, Shlagen desperately flees from a gang of libidinous matrons who are infatuated with them. Once Shlagen is safely away from them, he rejoins his comrades only to discover that Broot has decided to take a temporary leave of absence from the team in order to search for his missing wife. Shlagen volunteers to accompany him.
The other Omega Men leave the injured Harpis behind on Rashashoon to continue her convalescence and make haste towards Euphorix. Primus knows that Kalista intends on re-activating the planetary shield permanently, and he is desperate to return to her before the shield is erected. On Euphorix, Kalista's loyal attendant Rhoark asks her why she hasn't raised the shield yet. Kalista has been biding as much time as possible in the hopes that Primus might return in time. At the urging of Alonzo Dulak, Kalista re-activates the shield, then destroys the shield controls so that it can never be lowered again.
Meanwhile, Broot and Shlagen take a cruiser and plot a course towards a set of coordinates that Broot acquired during his brief tenure as a prisoner of the Citadel. The journey brings them to a grey, arid planetoid seemingly devoid of life. They find a beacon which directs them to a series of underground tunnels. While exploring the tunnels, Broot and Shlagen are separated and Broot finds the embalmed remains of a Changralynian youth. He continues searching until he comes to a massive cavern populated by dozens of young, sickly Changralynians hard at work mining ore. Upon seeing Broot, they immediately flock to him and refer to him as "father" as he is the oldest male Changralynian they have ever seen in their lives. Broot's emotions are a bevy of love, sadness and anger. He is shocked to learn that these broken laborers had never even heard of the Citadel, much less having had contact with their captors. When the day's labors are complete, the Changralynians bring Broot to their temple. They tell him that their religion is the only thing that makes their lives bearable. Broot steels himself, though his anger swells. Religion is the tool that led these Changralynians to a life of slave labor to begin with. At the temple, a blind, Changralynian woman begins reading scripture. Broot is horrified to discover that this woman is his wife Kattayan-Bish.
