Synopsis for "Monsters of the Unknown"

Kate Kane tells the Outsiders that a storm has been raging in a region of the Atlantic Ocean known as the Enlil Triangle since New Year's Day 2000. She reveals that she was part of a small number of young West Point cadets sent to observe the Navy's intelligence gathering operation and they were attacked by a sea monster, leaving her as the only survivor. Kate tells the others that this is exactly the sort of unusual phenomenon the Outsiders should be investigating, although Drummer points out she just wants revenge on the monster for her friends' deaths. Nevertheless, Luke agrees they should investigate.

The three fly to the Triangle in their jet, only to find the storm being guarded by the extremely gung-ho New Challengers of the Unknown, who order them to turn back. Luke refuses and sends the plane diving under the water, revealing that it is amphibious as of the previous day. The Challengers dive down after them in mecha suits and destroy the plane's engines, causing them to sink to the seabed. They land in the midst of dozens of giant skeletons; a sea monster's graveyard.

Batwoman swims out in an armoured diving suit and is confronted by the Challengers. They reveal that the site is where Aquaman dumps the bodies of the sea monsters he kills, and it is supposed to remain a secret. Bethany Hopkins decides to destroy them and the graveyard, but they are suddenly attacked by the monster. Drummer taps on the wall of the jet and somehow divines something important about the monster. She orders Kate to disengage and tells her that the monster was born on the same day the storm began. Kate suddenly realises what she means and tells the Challengers to look at the size of the monster compared to the bones: it's a child, and it attacks anything that comes near because the rest of its kind were killed by humans and Atlanteans. Bethany still wants to kill it but the others tell her to back down, as the creature is harmless as long as it's left alone. The two groups depart, and Drummer congratulates Kate for not letting vengeance cloud her judgement.
