Quote1 I broke into Wylie's office and examined his books. They showed he was heavily in debt! Wylie had bought a lot of Antal's pictures while in Europe. He got them cheaply for Antal was not well known. He knew, however, that he could get fabulous prices for them if Antal suddenly became notoriously famous! He conceived the idea for these "prophetic" murders as he knew the curious public would ask for Antal's pictures. Quote2

Mr. Wylie is a banker from Gotham who is privately heavily in debt and lives in a mansion near Wayne Manor. While traveling in Europe he met a good but mostly unknown painter named Pierre Antal and formed a plan to recoup his debt using the artist. Wylie and Antal's agent Mr. Bleek convinced Antal to travel to Gotham and paint portraits for the high society of the city.

Shortly after Antal's arrival Wylie put together a party at his mansion to introduce Antal to Gotham's rich and influential while talking up Antal's portraiture and ensuring Antal's antagonism with fellow artist Travers and quick tempered Gothamite Mr. Drake who is vocally possessive of his wife were on full view, making the two of them appear as more likely culprits in the murders Wylie was plotting. Wylie then murdered Vangild, Carmen Largo, and Mr. Warren while Robin saved his attempted fourth victim Mr. Travers, and his fifth attempt on Bruce Wayne led to his unmasking and capture by Batman and Robin. Wylie turned his own gun on himself rather than face the consequences of his actions.

  • Deception
  • Stealth: Wylie was able to leave his home undetected while under protective police surveillance and sneak up his victims and away from the scenes of the murders even when he killed Carmen Largo in front of a large audience.[1]
  • This version of Painter of Death, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series. Even though versions of the character may have since appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
