Pandora was a woman created by the Olympian Gods and who opened the box that released all evil into the world.

Pandora, whose name means "the gift of all" and is the "living embodiment of all that is woman", was created long ago by Hephaestus and blessed by the Gods under order of Zeus. To punish the hero Prometheus, who stole fire from the Gods to give to men, Zeus offered her along with a box to him as a punishment disguised as a gift. Prometheus rejected her, but she was accepted by his brother Epimetheus, and, living among men, Pandora, overcome by curiosity, eventually opened the box that Zeus expressly forbade her from opening, releasing all evil into the world.

According to Ananke the Fate, however, Pandora was actually an emanation of the Earth Mother Gaea who, attending to the needs of the still young humanity, manifested herself as Pandora, the Maiden-Mother, and from her Urn of Plenty she brought forth all manner of fruits of the earth. She also taught them how to make fire, and, the urn now empty, she shattered it and from it she blessed humanity with all the virtues necessary to evolve as a civilization.

Ages pass, the Olympians defeat the Titans and Zeus shares the domains of the Earth with his brothers, rewriting the history of the beginning of humanity with his own version: the great Pandora is changed and diminished. No longer earth-born, but the handwork of Zeus, remade into the beautiful evil. Woman, who was the inspirer, is the temptress; she who was the source is the sorceress, who brings to man no joy, but misery. She is turned out from humanity, shunned by Olympus.

Pandora was then forced to wander the lands as a reviled figure until she was assimilated back into Earth by Gaea at her behest, and it is suggested that she would be reborn again from clay as Diana of Themyscyra.[2]
