The Pandora Pits are alchemical fonts of "terrible potency" formed from the evils released by Pandora that were too frightened by the innocence of the world to roam free.

History

Unholy Trinity

Found by Circe in the Great Ruins 60 miles from the Kahndaqi border, the sorceress hoped to use the pits to restore her soul from a dimension of Hell to her body before her encroaching demise, through the sacrifice of the powerful heroic symbols known as the trinity of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman to open the pits and allow her the intense magical power to do so.[1] They were used by her and Ra's al Ghul, and temporarily Lex Luthor, who all together were deemed worthy of their power, and she told the others of her group that it was all for untold power.[2]

Tied Together

The pits were first used by Circe and Ra's to separate Etrigan from Jason Blood by way of spilling the demon's blood into one of the pits and having its spirits drag him in. When this effort to bring a demon army into the world failed, Circe used her magic and a map for the pits to move them to the Transatlantic Mountains in Antarctica to avoid their location being discovered by the trinity.[3]

Dark Destiny

These pits were thereafter used to possess Red Hood, Bizarro, and Artemis with demonic entities by spilling their blood into the pits. When Red Hood swallowed Zatanna and Deadman whole,[4] they were automatically transferred to the pits, whereupon John Constantine, having come there in the hope of rescuing them, suggested the use of a demonically-possessed Deadman to capture each member of the superhero trinity after being stabbed in the heart by Ra's, with Deadman's first target being Superman.[5]

Sacrificing Zatanna next by stabbing her and dropping her into the pit with her blood to summon all of the members of the trinity to her location, Circe's deception was learned by Ra's, who, after a combination of the failure to add Batman to the sacrifices and the defection of Luthor realized that all of the talk of magical trinities was nothing but lies and deception, and so she threw him into the pits as well, noting that she would sacrifice the entire world to regain her soul.[1]

After she dropped several more members of the League of Assassins into the pits as an additional sacrifice for power, and planned to sacrifice the true heroes she had captured, Deadman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Zatanna to the pits to feed their "altruism or honor... ability to generate fear or inspire". Unfortunately, through the efforts of Batman and the rejuvenated Outlaws, including temporarily stopping the hearts of the possessed through chemical or sonic means, Circe's attempt at a sacrifice was stopped, and she was stabbed in the back by Ra's as he emerged from the pit, falling in in turn only to be saved by Wonder Woman and her allies using the Lasso of Truth.[6]
