Parallax is the parasitic entity of fear, who corrupted the Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, and turned him into a power-hungry host.
History
At some point, the Parallax entity encountered and then possessed the former Green Lantern Thaal Sinestro, joining his Lantern Corps. Later, as Sinestro had the overwhelmed Green Lantern Hal Jordan, once his student, at his mercy, he released to Parallax and let it enter Jordan, in order to control him so that he would join Sinestro too. Hal, together with Sinestro, destroyed Oa, home of the Green Lanterns, with all its inhabitants. This plan however, was cut short by Parallax controlling Hal instead, and made Sinestro submit to him, and become his acolyte.
The Parallax entity remained mostly inactive, due to Jordan's will. But when Hal's replacement John Stewart, Green Arrow, Shayera Hol and Adam Strange encountered Hal and teamed up to stop Sinestro, the parasite began to dominate him little by little making him to the point of murdering Sinestro's allies without any remorse. They went to Rann in order to convince Sardath to not use the Zeta Beam on Thanagar, but Sinestro and his allies attacked them, resulting in Sinestro impaled by John's power ring. Before dying, Sinestro warned John that his master will kill them all.
When it appeared that Hal had convinced Sardath not to use the Zeta Beam, Parallax completely overpowered him and killed Sardath, revealing him as the true mastermind behind the conflict between Rann and Thanagar. Stewart would engage him in a battle, overpowering him through his willpower, and confiscating the dead Lanterns' rings (save for one). And when Parallax was trying to murder Stewart, he died with Hal as he was shot by Green Arrow. While it would be possible for Parallax to have survived, nothing indicates so and it is assumed he died with his host.
