Philip II (21 May 1527 – 13 September 1598), sometimes known in Spain as Philip the Prudent, was King of Spain from 1556, King of Portugal from 1580, and King of Naples and Sicily from 1554 until his death in 1598.
History
King Philip acted sometimes as an ally and sometimes as an enemy of the Black Pirate. Although he was a defender of the Catholic faith, Philip II was also extremely intolerant of other religions. He reinforced the Spanish Inquisition, which persecuted Protestants, Jews, Muslim converts to Christianity, and anyone considered a heretic. The Inquisition carried out harsh trials, torture, and executions. His religious intolerance culminated in the Revolt of the Netherlands, where Protestant populations resisted the imposition of Catholicism, leading to a war of independence that lasted decades.
