Phillips and Crookshanks is a race of beings created by Doctor Manhattan to care only for others and nothing for themselves. They live on Europa, and all the males and females are identical clones. They served Manhattan for many years, but after he left them they instead turned to serve Adrian Veidt.
History
Origins
In 1985, the godlike Doctor Manhattan left Earth to create a superior life form to the human being, and settled down on Jupiter's moon of Europa. After he created a pocket of plant life and atmosphere on the moon, he created a male and a female being, resembling a human but rapidly aged to adulthood via bio-mechanical maturation, granted instantaneous speech and higher brain function, and with a desire to love and care for others instead of themselves. The males, called Mister Phillips, all looked alike, as did the females, called Ms. Crookshanks, with their appearances based on two kind beneficiaries Doctor Manhattan knew as a child and to whom he promised to create something beautiful when he got older. Phillips and Crookshanks would be birthed on the world in the water, asexually cloned as fetuses until they rapidly reached adulthood.
Manhattan brought them a manor house in which to live, where he dressed them and they attempted to tend to his every whim. Phillips and Crookshanks were kind and gentle beings who derived happiness from seeing their master happy, and their insatiable desire to serve fascinated Manhattan for many years. However, just as he did with humanity, he eventually grew bored and, in 2009, abandoned his creations to live out his days with his true love on Earth, who, through his powers of precognition, he knew he was destined to spend the rest of his life with.[1]
Serving Adrian Veidt
Six months after abandoning Phillips and Crookshanks, Doctor Manhattan sent to Europa a new master for them to adore and serve in the form of Adrian Veidt, a narcissistic genius who felt unfulfilled and dissatisfied with his life for the last few years. Phillips and Crookshanks were more than happy to serve a new master and indulge in his every whim, even though those whims often involved abusing and killing them.
Eventually, Veidt grew tired of his paradise and started to see it as a prison and became abusive to the clones, eventually concocting a plan to catapult their corpses into space to spell a rescue message on Europa's surface, knowing that Lady Trieu would see it. He then left via Lady Trieu's rocketship, but not before murdering the first Mister Phillips, who he had commanded to be his enemy.
