Planet Krypton is the name of a superhero-themed restaurant owned and operated by Booster Gold. Located in the downtown of Metropolis, it is decorated with all sorts of fanciful superhero memorabilia. To further the restaurant's theming, the waitstaff are dressed as various superheroes from the DC Universe.

History

Kingdom Come

In the aftermath of the Justice League of America becoming defunct and the retirement of prominent superheroes like Superman, many citizens were left yarning for champions to protect and inspire them like they did in the Golden Age. This lead to the creation of various businesses and commercial enterprises (such as Planet Krypton), designed to profit off of the public's nostalgia for a more hopeful and wondrous age. Because of this, references and memorabilia associated with newer and violent anti-heroes like Magog are entirely absent, with only objects and costumes related to the old JLA appearing.

Following the passing of his personal friend Wesley Dodds, Reverend Norman McCay decides to take a stroll around the city while contemplating his relationship with Dodds and the loss of human achievement in the face of metahuman might. When he happens upon Planet krypton, McCay enters the restaurant in the hopes of recreating in his mind the heroes he once admired, only to be deeply disappointed by how it has reduced these god-like legends into tacky kitsch relics; with the restaurant host that greets McCay confusing Green Lantern (whom he happens to be dressed as) with Green Arrow. Saddened by Planet Krypton's bastardization of the Justice League, McCay quikly changes his mind and quietly leaves without ever taking a seat.

The restaurant has been stocked with weapons from other realities in Hypertime by Ibn al Xu'ffasch, Nightstar, Offspring, and Kid Flash for defeating Gog. As a result, "ghosts" of various superheroes in those realities have been seen in the restaurant at night.[1][2]

Notes

  • Planet Krypton is a parody of Planet Hollywood. Interestingly in real-life, Ronald Perelman, one-time owner of the Marvel Entertainment Group, had at the time of the writing of Kingdom Come of making a deal with Planet Hollywood to establishing a restaurant chain themed on Marvel Superhero characters.
  • Planet Krypton's postmodern decor, the menu items being named after DC Comics characters, and the uniforms for the waitstaff being cheap imitations of iconic superhero costumes appears to be heavily inspired by a similar establishment as depicted in Quentin Tarantino's 1994 crime drama Pulp Fiction, where the characters Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace (played by John Travolta and Uma Thurman respectively) decide to have dinner at Jack Rabbit Slim's[3], which (like Planet Krypton) is an elaborately themed novelty restaurant, but based around 1950s Americana instead of the DC Universe. The eatery's cheesy atmosphere and employees dressed up as long-dead Hollywood stars like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe causes Vega to exclaim to Wallace that "its like a wax museum with a pulse".
