Synopsis for Manhunter: "The Vengeance"

Crooked politician Jonah Dwyer has died, and has strangely named five people he's wronged as the heirs to his estate. They also receive a sinister note that, "Soon you will learn the dead do return," signed by someone going by "the Vengeance".

Officer Richards has arrived to oversee things, and the will's barely been read, declaring that if anyone dies, the surviving heirs will divide up their share of the inheritance, before the first victim is claimed by the Vengeance. However they note that though there should be five heirs, there are only four. The last is crook Sparky Swanson, who'd also had dealings with Dwyer. Manhunter tracks him to the dive where Swanson hangs out, but the crook flees in a boat. When Manhunter catches up, again the heir's been killed even though it's impossible the killer wouldn't have been seen on open water. Like the first, though, Swanson was wearing a peculiar feather in his cap.

Back at the Dwyer place, Manhunter thinks he's worked out what happened, and saves another victim before they can be claimed: the killer was a falcon with a mace strapped to its foot, and its target was a colored feather concealed on each victim's head. The other two heirs were behind the plot, knowing all the money would go to the survivors if anything happened to any of them. The ornithology professor who trained the bird is shot by his accomplice, but as she flees, she fails to remember she has one of the feathers in her hat and is clubbed to death by the bird. Realizing that getting the heirs to kill each other was Jonah Dwyer's twisted plan, the last survivor donates it all to charity to wash his hands of the despicable affair.
