Synopsis for "The Last Lion Dies Alone"
Power Girl has returned to the Fortress of Solitude and told Superman about his experiences with Amalak. She tried to search for him but he was gone, without even leaving a single trace. She voices her suspicions that the so-called "Kryptonian infection" they have been investigating is in fact the Symbioship trying to recapture Power Girl once again. Superman reassures that the Symbioship was dismantled and it can't harm Power Girl anymore. He also asks why did she want them to talk at the Fortress' animal sanctuary, but Power Girl doesn't answer, even though she wants to keep the alien lion company when he dies. Superman returns to Metropolis, but not before suggesting Power Girl to call Omen just to make sure she is safe.
The next day, Omen is roller-skating across the streets of Metropolis until she finds a group of protesters causing a riot. She uses her telepathy to force the protesters to stop their attacks and instead gather around her. She identifies them as members of the Blue Earth movement and one of the protesters say that a Kryptonian virus has been killing humans. She tells the protests to stand down and get on their knees while she goes to investigate.
At the Fortress, Hamlet continues to talk to the lion, whom she has called "Hamlet". She talks to him about her recent findings. She has come to believe that the virus is actually a parasite. Instead of spreading, it can only jump from one person to another, killing their hosts. After the fight with Amalak, she was allowed to see the first victim's body and saw that his white-cell count had increased. The victim's body was fighting something off before he died. She still believes the Symbioship to be somehow behind this mess. Sure, it was dismantled, but the AI must have backed itself up somewhere.
Power Girl falls asleep and when she wakes up, she finds that Hamlet is gone. She frantically searches for him and finds him standing on top of a cliff, staring at the moon. He was trying to hide from potential predators and die on his own terms by falling into the rocks below, but Power Girl promises him to keep him company until he dies. They fall asleep by each other's side and when Power Girl wakes up, she finds that Hamlet has died in his sleep.
When she tries to get back into the Fortress, however, she finds that Hamlet's body is missing. She can't even listen to his heartbeat. She tells Kelex to call Superman while she goes to the sanctuary, only to be attacked by Hamlet, who has been possessed by the Symbioship's AI. The AI departs from Hamlet's body and possesses Power Girl, just when Superman arrives at the Fortress.
