Donnie was a classmate of Barbara Gordon and a wanna-be comedian. However, his jokes were terrible, and the audience laughed at him rather than at his jokes. He was soon noticed by the Joker who wanted a sidekick of his own. Joker recruited him and gave him some of his own gadgets, including a costume of his own, naming him Prank.
History
The two came up with a plan to shoot the GCPD with giant gumballs, but Batman and Batgirl arrived to stop them, Batgirl recognized Prank's voice as her classmate Donnie's, and realized that Prank was Donnie, but Joker knocked her out with a boxing glove and strapped her to one of the gumballs, planning to launch it, but Prank refused to hurt anyone, Joker got angry at this and took him to Ace Chemicals where he planned to drop him into the same vat of chemicals that created him, but Batman and Batgirl stopped him from doing so, and helped Donnie up, Joker threatened to shoot a gun at them, but he was knocked out by Donnie, who then told him that he was right that the best punchline is the one you don't see coming.
