The being known only as Prisoner 8912 is a mysterious alien convicted by the United Planets as a "destroyer of worlds".
History
Prisoner 8912 developed an evil alternate male personality, which regarded himself as her "brother". He quickly became dominant over her original personality, to the point that he could split off from her as a separate physical presence.[1]
The "brother" personality forced her to join him in travelling from planet to planet. He delighted in war and destruction, and so every time they landed on a new world, Prisoner 8912's brother would force her to first induce terror and mistrust in the populace, which he would then channel into anger. The planet would then be consumed by war and the people would eventually destroy it and themselves. The siblings would then move on to another world. Although 8912 hated this, she was unable to escape her brother's control.
They witnessed Supergirl's confrontation with Krem of the Yellow Hills on the planet Fiorinine, and this inspired the courage Prisoner 8912 needed to break free of her brother. She temporarily forced the personality into dormancy by stabbing his physical form with his own sword and abandoning him on an exploding planet, although she knew he would eventually return.[2] She was arrested by the United Planets and charged with the destruction of one-hundred and fifty seven planets.[3] Her crimes were considered so heinous that a robotic judge had to be built specifically for the purpose of trying her, as no sentient being would be capable of ruling objectively.[4] Upon conclusion of the trial, Supergirl was tasked to escort her to her final prison, but she was attacked by two alien races who each wanted revenge on 8912.[5] Supergirl and 8912 were captured by one of these species,[6] who attempted to auction off 8912 to the highest bidder among her many victims.[7] Supergirl managed to escape imprisonment and free 8912 as well, and they fled in a shuttle.[8]
On the shuttle, Prisoner 8912 fell into some kind of catatonic state. However, once the shuttle was in deep space she suddenly snapped back to awareness and tried to take the controls of the shuttle. Supergirl restrained Prisoner 8912 and 8912 made telepathic contact with her, begging Supergirl to kill her.[3] She told Supergirl her history and said that the only way to be free of her brother was for Supergirl to kill her. Supergirl refused, but Prisoner 8912 said she would leave her no choice.[2] She put Supergirl in a dream state and attempted to crash the shuttle into a nearby planet and kill them both. Power Girl sensed what was happening from across the galaxy and broke Supergirl out of the trance. They survived the crash by landing in a swamp and Prisoner 8912 tried to induce rage in Supergirl's mind to make Supergirl attack her, but Power Girl also shielded her from that.[9]
Prisoner 8912's brother manifested from her mind on the planet. He telepathically took control over Prisoner 8912 again, but Supergirl called out to her and she broke free of her brother, pushing him away.[10] Prisoner 8912 physically fused with Supergirl, with Power Girl adding her psychic strength to theirs from across the galaxy. They fought her brother, but he told her that she would inevitably fail and could not escape who she is. 8912 told Supergirl that he was right: she is him and they are one. Her brother hit them and forcibly split Supergirl off from her. Supergirl told Prisoner 8912 that if she can never escape her brother, then he can never escape her either. At Supergirl's urging, Prisoner 8912 grabbed her "brother" and started forcibly reabsorbing him into her body.[1]
Prisoner 8912 and the "brother" fused into a single body and single personality, so in a sense Prisoner 8912 was killed, but also saved. Supergirl sentenced Prisoner 8912 to learn every detail of the worlds that they had destroyed, so they could understand what the death of a world meant.[11]
