Proto was a prototype of the Batbots Batman uses to protect Gotham when he needs to be away.

History

Proto is larger and less streamlined than his successors. His AI programming is also far more advanced than the simple-minded Batbots, and he has actually developed sentience. Though a fully-capable robot with a strong desire to help his creator fight for justice, Batman felt Proto was too large and clumsy to be let out into the city, and thus relegated his creation to helping maintain the Batcave and being company for Ace. When Black Mask took control of the Batbots and threatened to destroy Gotham, Proto was forced to step up and fulfill his primary function. With his powerful battle-mode, Proto easily destroyed his successors and disposed of the explosives.
